-Understand the value of a written gifted curriculum''s scope and sequence.

-Know how to plan gifted programs.

-Identify and describe various gifted curriculum models.

-Know and apply the National Associatoin of Gifted Children Program Standards related to curriculum and.

program planning in their practice.

-Know, understand, and implement the elements involved in executing and evaluating a gifted program.

PARTICIPANT MUST BE ENROLLED IN THE GIFTED IN-FIELD ENDORSEMENT PROGRAM 

TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CLASS.

Step 1 - Enrollment Process

To register for the Gifted Endorsement Program the following information is required:

  • Gifted Program Application Forms
  • NEGA RESA Registration Form for each course;
  • Written recommendation of current principal or other appropriate supervisor in the employing system;
  • Written statement of personal and professional characteristics that would indicate the likelihood of being successful in the work of the Gifted Endorsement Teacher;
  • Valid clear, renewable Georgia teaching certificate; and
  • Copy of college transcript.

The above information must be sent to Brenda Mercer at Northeast Georgia RESA, 375 Winter Street, Winterville, GA 30683.

All paperwork must be signed by school principal and system staff development coordinator.

Step 2 - Course Registration Process

Participant must have completed the first course in the series before registering for this course.  Participant will be automatically enrolled in this course and the remaining two courses and notified prior to each course of enrollment and option to cancel enrollment if no longer needing to take the course.

The Gifted In-field Endorsement program consists of four courses:

  • Characteristics of the Gifted,
  • Methods & Materials for Teaching the Gifted,
  • Curriculum & Program Development of the Gifted, and
  • Priorities for Assessment of the Gifted.

Each course consists of 50 total contact hours (5 SDUs).

Participants must complete and pass all four courses to receive the Gifted In-field Endorsement. It is strongly recommended, by the program instructors, that these courses be taken in the sequence listed.



Course Description: 

This course focuses on methods for differentiating instruction for gifted learners. We'll examine the characteristics of gifted teachers and skills to:

  • Match needs of gifted learners with methods and materials;
  • Use acceleration and enrichment strategies;
  • Develop and defend grouping plans;
  • Develop creativity and thinking skills; and
  • Address the special needs of underachieving or unmotivated learners
