The Gifted In-field Endorsement program consists of four courses:
- Characteristics of the Gifted,
- Priorities for Assessment
- Methods & Materials for Teaching the Gifted,
- Curriculum & Program Development of the Gifted, and
Each course consists of 50 total contact hours (5 SDUs).
Participants must complete and pass all four courses to receive the Gifted In-field Endorsement. It is strongly recommended, by the program instructors, that these courses be taken in the sequence listed.
Description
This course introduces you to the characteristics and needs of gifted learners and how those needs might be met. We examine definitions of gifted from a current and a historical perspective. We will also study special sub-groups of gifted children including females, minorities, and underachievers. Finally, we look at the characteristics necessary of a teacher of the gifted. Course goals:
Participants in this course will increase knowledge and develop skills to:
- Identify characteristics of gifted learners and their cognitive social/emotional development as distinguished from other populations;
- Understand needs of special populations of gifted learners (e.g., twice exceptional, females, underachievers, ESOL);
- Understand state policies and procedures related to definition, identification, services, and funding of programs for gifted learners;
- Develop enrichment activities to meet needs of gifted learners;
- Understanding standards for and dispositions of teachers of gifted students; and
- Demonstrate knowledge of delivery models as related to characteristics of gifted children.
